If all this fails, I guess I will just have to blow away the existing configs, recreate the vm and attach the existing vhd's. That's the standard procedure. I had a valid temp folder, was receiving error 1618 and once I deleted everything from windows\temp, the install completed ok. And make sure to delete the contents of your temp folder! Click down with the keyboard arrows till you get to Task Manager, then press Enter.
