I also cannot download the service pack 2 for Office 2003. Anyway, you never loose what's on your backup, assuming it's a good backup (and, the inverse, you risk to loose what you didn't backup). What u need to do is to reinstall Office 2003. I mean, it was working fine until two days ago, it's just excel, and I don't want to lose all my work - which is considerable.

The updates I mentioned above were what came up when I did a look-see at my MS update history - the only two that came up that hadn't installed, and continue
