Another - although non-trivial - option would be to migrate to another database system, say PostgreSQL. Do web searches, again. Requesting ticket reports, especially longer ones. The timeout is still used up, and 40 seconds is too long anyway.
And/or use phpMyAdmin to create a backup of the database.
